This marks the third and final entry from a band that for no explicable reason could not make a ripple in the same lake that their contemporaries swam in. While peers like Jawbox and Jesus Lizard enjoyed moderate success, Trenchmouth seemed forever relegated to the margins, which, based on the strength of this record is a real shame. Had this record come out on either the Amphetamine Reptile or Touch and Go labels it seems unlikely that obscurity would have continued as … mehr“Vs. the Light of the Sun” has those labels’ earmarks: half-spoken/half shouted , unintelligible, strident vocals; weird, stop-on-a-dime time signatures; busy-as-a-bee basslines and whomp-that-sucker drum assaults. Those components are all over records by Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses but Trenchmouth further dip their grimy toes in pools of dub, funk, no wave and noise. Had this record bore a sticker proclaiming, “produced by Steve Albini” (it wasn’t, but it was mixed by Brad Wood) it would have produced a tsunami. Overdue a critical reassessment, this record will pull you under. weniger
