In the Australian Northern Territory of the 1920s, preacher Fred Smith (Sam Neill) lent the services of his Aboriginal farmhand Sam Kelly (Hamilton Morris) to settling-in new neighbor Harry March (Ewen Leslie). However, after March's drunken assault of Sam's wife (Natassia Gorey Furber) leads to a self-defense shooting, the indigenous family is forced to go on the run through their home country from a determined posse.
