Rather as certain film directors put their name in the title, the full appellation of this lush new collection is Andrea Griminelli's Cinema Italiano. This distinguishes it from Henry Mancini's Cinema Italiano but may leave many wondering who Andrea Griminelli is. He is an Italian classical flautist who grew-up loving film music and has since become a crossover artist, premiering Ennio Morricone's flute concerto and working with everyone from Pavarotti to Sting. All … mehrthree musicians are represented on a collection that provides new interpretations of the classic sounds of Italian cinema. Sting acquits himself well on the beautiful Morricone ballad "My Heart and I" and Deborah Harry is in stylish form with the themes from Amarcord by Nino Rota and Luis Bacalov's Il postino. Less convincing are Pavarotti's overly emotive take on Rota's Romeo and Juliet and Griminelli's version of Morricone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is decidedly under-powered. However, more romantic pieces reworked for Griminelli's warm and melodic flute from Cinema Paradiso and The Mission are just fine. Ending with a suite paying homage to Rota's many Fellini scores, this is an elegantly produced, romantic collection of superior easy listening and balladry that should make all but die-hard soundtrack purists very happy. --Gary S Dalkin weniger
