Ihr drittes Album King of Bongo brachte die in Paris ansässige Combo erstmalig größtenteils in englischer Sprache heraus um, nachdem sie als Frankreichs populärste Alternative-Band einen festen Status erreicht hatten, auf dem internationalen Markt Fuß zu fassen. Gegründet 1986 in einem Pariser Umfeld aus dem Bands wie die Artverwandten Les Negresses Vertes stammen, setzt sich der Kern von Mano Negra quasi aus einem spanischen Familienbetrieb zusammen, der nicht nur … mehrsprachlich für eine wilde Musik garantiert. Rock, Punk, Rap, Pop und Folk kreieren in einer nicht näher bestimmbaren, meist äußerst bewegungsfreudigen Mixtur aus Musik eine mitreißende Aufnahme, die wohl das Gegenteil von Langeweile bedeutet. Stile, Tempi und Sprachen wechseln von Lied zu Lied, trotzdem hat das knappe Dutzend Musiker all dem seinen eigenen Stempel aufgedrückt. Die Texte sind ebenso wild und teilweise anstößlich wie die Musik, der Gesang nicht unbedingt der beste, aber durchaus passend, egal zu welchem Extrem. Die wahrscheinlich bekannteste Veröffentlichung von Mano Negra, zum ersten Mal mit teilweise englischen Texten, voller Energie und einem Crossover, der auch Folk- und Ethnoeinflüsse nicht verleugnet -- interessant, unterhaltsam und provokativ und einfach gut. --Felix von Vietsch weniger
