Surf noir superstar Dick Dale influenced a generation of bands and guitar players in the 1960s, most prominently The Beach Boys, The Ventures and The Safaris. Evocative of waves crashing against the sun-drenched shores of California, his unique sound was based on the combination of big band beat and Middle Eastern melodies, played with an accelerated mandolin playing style and drenched with lashings of reverb. Together with Jimi Hendrix he is responsible for pioneering … mehra new guitar sound; enthusiasts have debated endlessly as to who got there first. "Lets Go Trippin", was the first true surf instrumental; the Middle Eastern-tinged guitar pyrotechnics are showcased perfectly on "Miserlou", the use of which in the Tarantino film Pulp Fiction introduced a new audience to Dale's work. This collection serves as a perfect introduction to the surf guitarist's work, and will also please his dedicated fans. --F.B.Hawkes weniger
