On its sophomore effort, this British quintet moves from the Beatles and Byrds influences of its likable debut to an edgier punk pop sound. The thickened distortion in the guitars and the more prominent pessimism in the lyrics don't spoil the pleasures of the music, however. The lyrics are simple, but Nick Cope's vocals and Nick Burton's guitar are at once melodic and personal, and they feed off the energy of the rhythm section to make these songs causes for … mehrcelebration. The best songs, like "Wembley" and "Everything Falls Apart on Me," boast choruses that spring free from the verses with a delirious release of soaring harmonies. --Geoffrey Himes weniger
